Before Anaesthetic

There are lots of things you can do to help your pet be as comfortable as possible and help keep them safe.

Cats and dogs should be starved for around 6 hours before anaesthetic. So ensure the whole household know not to feed them in the morning of a procedure. You don't need to get up in the middle of the night to feed them but do give them an extra meal as late as you can before you go to bed. Water is fine right up until they come in to see us, it is important to keep them well hydrated.

Rabbits and other small mammals should not be starved as the risk of them being sick is much lower and they have fast metabolisms so need to keep eating all the time! Bring a day's portion of their regular food with them and something they would consider a real treat to get them eating again as soon as possible.

Most long term medication is fine to give as normal, insulin is different, don't give it that morning but do bring it in with you for us to use.

Make sure your pet has been able to have enough opportunity to toilet but don't let them get wet and muddy.

Before Surgery

Important things you can help reduce infections before an op.

Ensure your pet is clean, keep dogs on a lead especially if you know they like to be mucky pups in puddles, ditches and ponds. Brush and wash their coat and skin to remove any dirt and debris.

Wash their bedding or place a clean sheet over it for when they get home from surgery.

Consider the least stressful way of preventing your pet from licking a surgical site. In many cases we can supply pet t-shirts which cover the body, but if this isn't appropriate your pet may need a buster collar. They can take a bit of getting used to so for anxious pets wearing them at home for short periods before the day of surgery can help.
